What is Cord Blood Banking?

Banking cord blood is a simple low risk process. When a baby is born there is a unique opportunity to collect the baby’s umbilical cord blood that contains an extremely rich source of stem cells. The stem cells in the cord blood are the building blocks of the blood and immune system.  It is a simple, low risk process that could help save lives.

The cord blood is normally discarded as clinical waste but an increasing number of parents are opting to collect and store their child’s cord blood stem cells at birth. In recent years, the number of conditions that stem cells can treat has vastly increased; who knows what the future holds?

Why are Mums around the world banking their child’s cord blood?

• Cord blood contains many types of stem cells but is particularly rich in hematopoietic stem cells, probably the most valuable type.


• Cord blood stem cells are currently used to treat a number of diseases including some cancers, immunodeficiency, metabolic disorders and blood disorders such as sickle-cell anaemia.


• The collection procedure takes around 5 minutes to complete and poses no risk to either mum or baby, the midwife deciding when it is safe to collect the blood.

How much does it cost?

The complete service costs £1550 or £2000 depending on your tissue storage requirements. You may need someone to collect the sample and our partners will charge £250 for this service. Our fee includes the collection kit, transport of the tissue to the laboratory, all testing, processing and freezing and 25 years of storage in the highest quality conditions.  All prices are fully inclusive, so there are no hidden costs.
