Blackheath High School

As a registered charity (no.306983), we aim to advance the education of girls and young women. Girls benefit from all the advantages of a small school in terms of care, support and positive relationships, while having the opportunities and facilities of a far larger school.

Students enjoy small teaching groups with teaching based on giving the girls exciting, informative and well-structured lessons and projects. The school provides a broad and interesting curriculum, enriched by a strong and varied programme of extra-curricular activities with the use of ICT incorporated throughout Girls learn Mandarin and Latin; perform in the 345-seat theatre and play tennis on one of the 13 tennis courts.

The school holds many national awards including the Arts Mark Gold and the prestigious ICT Mark; recognising the school as being in the forefront of using information and communications technology (ICT) to enhance all aspects of pupil's work; including providing personal laptops for every Sixth Former; and a virtual learning environment.

Students flourish in an all-girl environment, and the school's distinctive, holistic, forward-thinking approach to girls' education places a strong emphasis on their health and welfare. Pupils can join one of the school's many clubs, including wellbeing activities. Many girls participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and enjoy activities such as debating, film club, gardening club, the editorial team of the school magazine and exciting trips abroad to places including Iceland, USA China and across Europe.  Girls in Y2 and Y7 receive a musical instrument and free tuition for a year.

Rated 'outstanding' in the most recent ISI inspection (February 2008) and Ofsted inspection (June 2008), the 650 pupils enjoy considerable success in gaining places at prestigious universities including Oxford and Cambridge, while achieving standards well above the national average. In 2010, the pass rate at A-level was 100%, with an exceptional 80% awarded at A*- B grades.  Over 13% of the grades were awarded A*. At GCSE, 100% of girls achieved at least 5 A*-C  grades.  Several  girls were awarded straight A*and A with over half of the grades awarded being A*and A.

The school provides an educational experience described as "stimulating and extraordinarily supportive, conducive to the highest standards of teaching and learning" in the Inspection Report prepared by the (ISI).

The school's team of 11 year olds has reached the 2012 National Final in Jaguar's Maths in Motion Challenge. During this competion, they were able to beat over 1,000 other schools and 150,000 other children!

With the arrival of the 2012 A-level results Blackheath have found a 100% pass rate for their students!

The sound of shrieks of joy filled the senior school on Thursday as our A level students opened their much anticipated results! Despite the national downturn of results, particularly at the top grades, 100% of our students passed their exams with 39% awarded at A/A* - much higher than the national standard. Talented pianist Anna Edgar is delighted to have gained a place at Cambridge University to read Psychological and Behavioural Sciences as she celebrates gaining most impressive grades - A* in A level Biology, Chemistry and English Literature plus an A in AS level Physics.

The high grades achieved mean that most of our girls have secured places at their university of choice, including top Medical schools and Oxbridge. For Lauren Benson, this means reading English Language and Literature at Oxford. Lauren has attained an outstanding collection of A levels; gaining A* grades in History and French and an A grade in English Literature at A level, plus grade As in Business Studies and Economics and Critical Thinking at AS level. Lauren has managed to achieve these grades whilst also being a Peer Mentor and Pastoral Care Prefect for our younger students and a formidable member of our successful Debating Team.

"We are once again pleased with our results and I congratulate all of the girls who have worked so hard," says Headteacher, Lisa Laws. "This has been another successful year for Blackheath High School and our results are testimony to the advantages of single sex education for girls and the holistic approach we apply to education. The high quality of education and pastoral care that we provide ensures that our girls achieve excellent A level grades in all subjects, including sciences and maths, gaining places at prestigious universities to read a diverse range of subjects."
