Steam Train

Ravenglass to Eskdale

Ravenglass, Cumbria

The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway runs for 7 miles from Ravensglass in the West of the Lake District, to Dalegarth Station and Visitor Centre in Eskdale at the foot of the mountains.  There are four steam locomotives, sometimes supplemented by diesel-hauled engines.  A return trip takes about 1 ¾ hours, and a single journey approximately 40 minutes.  A wonderful character called "La’al Ratty" (local Cumbrian phrase meaning "little narrow way" can be spotted at the station in the guise of a water vole, and there are "Walks from Ratty", a "La’al Ratty Quiz" and "La’al Ratty" children’s food boxes available from the excellent cafes at both stations.  The train journey passes through fabulous scenery, lots of wildlife (including red squirrel, wading birds), through woodland and moorland, ending up at Eskdale where the Dalegarth Visitor Centre has information on ten different walks, all easily achieved in between train journeys, and on cycle rides, with bikes available for hire. Other events during the year include "Days out with Thomas" and a "Ghost Train", ring for specific information.  Baby-changing facilities.  Open every day from mid-March to end October, and for special "Santa Experience" rides during December, weekends during the winter and for the February half term.

We strongly recommend you ring Ravenglass to Eskdale before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices.
