The IWM displays the realities of 20th centuary warfare. From tanks, rockets and fighter planes in the main lobby to a walk-in trench and secret war gallery. There are termtime programmes as well as holiday activities from 5yrs+ such as model making. Café, restaurant and shop. Open 10am-6pm daily. Admission free.

We strongly recommend you ring Imperial War Museum before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Imperial War Museum, www.iwm.org.uk, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if Imperial War Museum hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.

I took my 5yr old to the Horrible Histories exhibition "Terrible Trenches" this weekend and he really loved it. There are lots of things to try on (hats and jackets), as well as flaps to lift, tunnels to crawl through and bomb buttons to press. Although the subject is really heavy they've explained how it all started via a Horrible Histories cartoon style film, and looked at the subject from both sides of no man's land. He also loved the V2 bomb in the main hall and the enormous gun barrels outside the building. You just don't get the scale of these weapons until you're standing next to them. Fab shop and great cafe with delicious choc cake made for the perfect day out. Try to go before the Horrible Histories exhibition closes on 31st Oct.
