Choosing either diesel or steam engines, take a ride from Haverthwaite station to Lakeside (at the Southern end of Lake Windermere), via Newby Bridge, where you can then hop onto one of the three ex-railway steamers operated by Windermere Lake Cruises, to either Bowness (half way along the lake) or to Ambleside (at the top of the lake). There are special events during the year, in particular a Ghost Train ride in October, and various Santa Trains during December. There are Teddy Bear Picnics in September and Days out with Thomas in November. The Station Restaurant and Tea Rooms provide delicious homemade food, there is a gift shop and basic baby-changing facilities. Open from Easter to the end of October, (and December as above), mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Further details on the website.
We strongly recommend you ring Lakeside and Haverthwaite before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Lakeside and Haverthwaite, www.lakesiderailway.co.uk, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if Lakeside and Haverthwaite hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
