Travelling by old steam train or diesel locomotive through the stunning South Tyne Valley is a glorious trip for children and adults of all ages! Alston station is located in a riverside setting and the tickets are sold from a restored Victorian building. The train ride takes you from Alston to Kirkhaugh in Northumberland, where you can either take a picnic or there is a refreshment van, and the return journey lasts approximately 50 minutes. A souvenir shop sells ice creams and drinks, and the café on the station sells homemade pies, quiches, scones etc. There are basic baby-changing facilities. Open from Easter to October at weekends, and every day during school holidays, there are 4-5 trains a day starting at 11am, with the last train at 3.30 or later during the summer.
