The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre

81-83 High Street, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire

Aimed more at children 6yrs+, but if your child loves Roald Dahl then it's worth a visit. Failing that, little ones may prefer the Art Gallery in the Bucks Museum (see listing under Art Galleries). Excellent Café Twit serving Bogtrotter Chocolate Cake - a real kids' favourite

We strongly recommend you ring The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, www.roalddahlmuseum.org, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.

I visited the museum at the weekend with my 4 year old and 2 year old boys for the first time. Jake, the oldest loves Roald Dahl's stories, in particular Fantastic Mr Fox and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. The 'chocolate doors' as you enter one of the rooms look fantastic and even smell like chocolate! I found the background information fascinating, and I think the museum is best suited to older children, who are starting to write their own stories. However, both boys loved the dressing up boxes, and the activity room, where they could crayon characters etc. I loved cafe Twit, and it was great to see the boys eating food they wouldn't normally eat because it was disguised with funny names. When it was time to go, neither boys wanted to leave. So we'll definitely go back.
