Grange Road, Biddulph, Staffordshire
Designed in the mid-19th century by James Batemen, Biddulph Grange Garden is a lovely example of a high Victorian garden, with tunnels and pathways that lead you through a series of connected "compartments" of individual gardens. The exotic plants and architecture have been carefully thought out and you pass through illustrations of an Egyptian Court, to an Italian Terrace, to a Chinese Garden. There are lots of other Victorian eccentricities to spot, various stone sculptures and even an "upside-down" tree. Not terribly suitable for prams/buggies as some of the paths are uneven or have loose gravel and there are stepping stones and steps up and down to some of the gardens. A back-pack or front-carrying sling would be best advised. There is a children's quiz trail and a children's menu in the Tea Rooms. Open March-October, 11.30am-6pm, and in November-December from 11am-3pm.
We strongly recommend you ring Biddulph Grange Garden before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Biddulph Grange Garden, www.nationaltrust.org.uk, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if Biddulph Grange Garden hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
