The Soldiers seen "changing the guard" at Buckingham Palace (daily activites start from 10.45am from April to end of July - alternate days in winter) are from the Household Division, namely: The Life Guards, The Blues and Royal and the Household Cavalry - as well as foot soldiers from the Grenadiers, Coldstream, Scots, Welsh and Irish Guards. To get a good view they recommend the following spots: Wellington Barracks, St James' Palace or on the Mall (good for the mounted guards). You can get a picture with the guard on Pall Mall (past St James' Palace). You can also visit the Guards Museum and get to try on a bearskin.
We strongly recommend you ring Changing the Guard before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Changing the Guard, www.changing-the-guard.com, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if Changing the Guard hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
