Quickening
This is an old-fashioned but very descriptive term for the first movements of the baby felt by his or her mother.
It is a fluttering feeling low down in the abdomen, usually felt between 18 and 20 weeks with a first baby and between 16 and 18 weeks in subsequent pregnancies. You may not recognise the feeling at first, thinking it may be intestinal wind, but it soon becomes apparent that these first faint movements are indeed the reassuring sign that your baby is alive and well.
